Our city (Danville, VA) was built on textiles and tobacco. By far the leading employer for many years was Dan River, Inc., manufacturer of such things as "Bed-in-a-Bag", comforters, apparel, etc. A couple of years ago, the firm sold to an Indian company, and all but about 150 local jobs vanished from our economy (some reports estimate as many as 15,000 employees at one time). When we moved here almost 6 years ago, the plant employed 5,500.
One of our city's most visible landmarks was this sign that read "Home of Dan River Fabrics." a tornado damaged the sign a few years ago, and many in the city begged them to repair it. Instead it comes down today. There's more on this story on one of my other blogs, DanvilleVisualMusings.
Long story short, the demise of this company is sad for our community.
