Anyway, as a stupid photographer, I grabbed my camera, but failed to achieve one critical thing: perspective. When you look at these, there is really no way to see how big this bird really is. It was shot with a cheap 70-300mm lens, so it's not very sharp. Dang, I wish I had that $4,500 Canon Series-L lens!!

no idea! It looks more hawk like from one angle and more owl like from another :) cool though! I see all kinds of birds up here in the midwest that I never saw in california. I even saw a bald eagle once at my sister in law's house!
Holy smokes! I wish you had gotten a shot from the front, straight on. It's really hard to tell what this is. Maybe Gene knows. Have you checked the Audubon Society's website? Let us know if you find out what it is. It's way cool.

That is a Red Shouldered Hawk. I only know this because I found through a search with Google.

I found it by seaching for Birds of Virginia. Found a picture of a picture of a juvenile on the 3rd or 4th page.
