i think your spider would eat my japanese spider for breakfast.
That's a Barn Spider (Araneas cavaticus) and can grow to 3/4". I found this info at http://www.spiderroom.info/va_barnspider.html# which also has some similar pics to those you took Patrick.
Ryan how big was the garden spider you took the snapshot of in Japan?
